Technical highlights
During the restoration, it was particularly important that the theatres be modernized for efficiency and cost effectiveness while retaining some of the historic stage and backstage facilities
As National Historic Sites, no major architectural changes were made to the stages or auditoriums
The Elgin Theatre maximum seating capacity is 1,561; the Winter Garden maximum seating capacity is 992
The theatres are vastly improved by the support facilities in the new backstage addition, including, for both theatres, dressing rooms (space for 55 in the Elgin and 28 in the Winter Garden), crew rooms, offices, wardrobe, props and carpenter's rooms. There is a loading dock for a 45-foot (13.7-m) trailer. A freight elevator services all backstage levels of both theatres as well as rehearsal halls. There are two rehearsal halls measuring 50 feet x 50 feet (15.2 m x 15.2 m) with 12-foot (3.7-m) ceilings with sprung floors for dance
The Elgin proscenium opening measures 39 feet 2 inches (12 m) by 25 feet (7.6 m) and the stage is 29 feet 9 inches (9 m) from curtain line to the rear wall. House rigging is 55 lines, double purchase counterweight system. The stage floor is trapped and the pit lift can be used as a forestage or at auditorium level with seating installed, or at pit level to increase the pit size
The Winter Garden proscenium opening measures 36 feet 8 inches (11.2 m) by 20 feet (6 m) and the stage measures 22 feet 7 inches (6.9 m) from curtain line to the rear wall. The theatre has one of the few remaining working hemp rigging systems (with 22 line sets), as well as 10 motorized hydraulic line sets. There is a small orchestra pit with a forestage extension to create an apron
Orchestra and balconies in both theatres have been re-raked for improved sight lines
