The Register provides a unique perspective on heritage designation in Ontario. The Trust maintains the only statutory repository of information about heritage designations in the province. Here are some ways the Register can be used:
Applications of the Register
- Assessing “quality assurance” – are designation bylaws meeting the basic requirements of the Ontario Heritage Act?
- Tracking regions of Ontario not actively designating properties
- Identifying best practices
- Preparing designation templates to assist with the drafting of designation bylaws and reports
- Assisting with research and studies
- Assisting with heritage policy development
- Documenting the number and type of designations by time period, style of architecture, architect/builder, etc.
- Tracking unique and unusual property designations, such as dry stone walls, trees, air-raid shelters, etc.
- Providing examples of comparative designations
- Assisting municipalities with the preparation of designation bylaws
- Analyzing trends in heritage protection (e.g., How many individual trees are designated? How many heritage conservation districts focus on natural heritage? How many post-1950 buildings are designated? How many cemeteries are designated? etc.)
