Sir Harry Oakes Chateau

Explore the impressive chateau of the eccentric Sir Harry Oakes (1874-1943), the famous prospector of the gold-mining era who put Kirkland Lake on the map.

Acquired by the Ontario Heritage Trust in 1981, the site is home to the Museum of Northern History – where you can witness the hardy lives of early pioneers and their struggles as they forged a community out of the unforgiving wilderness.

Come and marvel at some of the unique architectural features, and learn about the man who lived life large – and then was murdered at his Bahamas home (the crime remains unsolved) ...
