Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation

Who can be nominated?

The successful candidates must meet the following criteria. They:

  • are residents of Ontario
  • can be individuals and/or groups, including:
    • Ontario corporations (private and public, not-for-profit and for-profit)
    • municipal, regional, provincial and federal government agencies and departments
  • may include the following activities:
    • volunteer
    • professional
    • commercial
    • academic
  • have completed (or substantially completed within the year preceding the nomination deadline) a specific conservation activity or project that is an exceptional contribution to natural or cultural heritage conservation
  • must include a project that is located in, and benefits, Ontario
  • should demonstrate:
    • leadership
    • commitment
    • creativity
    • positive impact on the community, region or province
    • heritage conservation best practices

Note: Directors and employees of the Ontario Heritage Trust and members of their immediate families are not eligible.

Who can nominate?

Nominators can include:

  • individuals, including themselves
  • local or provincial heritage organizations
  • local or regional municipalities
  • First Nations band councils
  • Métis community councils
  • Ontario Heritage Trust staff

Note: Nominations submitted by municipal councils, regional councils, First Nations band councils or Métis community councils must be supported by a motion of council.

What projects are eligible?

  • conservation (i.e., preservation, restoration or rehabilitation) of any of the following:
    • cultural or natural heritage properties, sites or areas
    • cultural landscapes
    • heritage conservation districts
    • collections or major artifacts
  • development or implementation of an innovative practice, technology or approach that has resulted in the successful conservation of cultural or natural heritage
  • developing partnerships to support natural and/or cultural heritage conservation activities
  • fundraising and promotion to support heritage conservation activities
  • educational, interpretive and/or commemorative activities that focus on cultural and natural heritage and history
  • development and delivery of activities or events that identify, safeguard and promote intangible cultural heritage, including:
    • oral traditions
    • expressions
    • language
    • performing arts – e.g., music, dance or theatre
    • social practices
    • rituals/ceremonies and festive events
    • knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe
    • traditional craftsmanship
  • promotion, celebration and preservation of cultural heritage and biological diversity
  • activities that promote environmental sustainability

Note: Self-nominations regarding a heritage property (e.g., adaptive reuse projects) that are not submitted by the property owner must provide their contact information in the application portal. This property owner must then complete the Reference Form included in the application portal in order for the nomination to be considered complete.

The Reference Form is not required for the nomination of individuals and any nominated projects that do not involve a real property.
