Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program: Announcement of artists selected for 2016

TORONTO – Today, the Ontario Heritage Trust announced the artists selected to participate in the Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program in 2016.

This is the second year of the residency program, which provides professional artists with accommodation and studio space at Fool’s Paradise in Toronto – the former residence of renowned Canadian artist Doris McCarthy.

The five artists selected to participate in the 2016 program are:

  • Nancy Holmes, a poet from Kelowna, British Columbia
  • Rachel MacFarlane, a painter, collage artist and digital animator from Toronto, Ontario
  • Kathy Stinson, an author of children’s literature and other works from Rockwood, Ontario
  • Ehryn Torrell, a painter and mixed-media artist from Newmarket, Ontario, now based in London, UK
  • Winnie Truong, a visual artist specializing in pencil drawings from Toronto, Ontario

When Doris McCarthy donated her property to the Ontario Heritage Trust, her vision was for other artists to have the opportunity to live and work at the site that inspired so much of her own artistic expression. To this end, the Trust established the Doris McCarthy Artist-in Residence Centre as a place that embraces the multi-disciplinary nature of the arts, strives to demonstrate the positive and restorative influence of landscape and the environment, and fosters excellence among contemporary Canadian artists, musicians and writers. As part of the residency program, participating artists provide a mentorship opportunity to support the development of an emerging artist or artists.

The Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program is supported by the RBC Foundation.

“The Trust is delighted to announce this year’s talented selection of artists who will live and work at Fool’s Paradise. We hope that their time at this extraordinary site is as inspiring and enriching as it was to Doris. I know that she would be pleased to see her vision coming to fruition.” – Beth Hanna, CEO, Ontario Heritage Trust

“Doris would be thrilled to know that artists have the opportunity to create new art, writings and music in a home she built. It’s exactly as she would have wanted and she would be tremendously grateful that these residencies are being implemented with such sensitivity and vision by the Ontario Heritage Trust.” – Beth McCarthy, niece of Doris McCarthy

“We are thrilled to be able to help bring to life Doris’ vision of an environment where artists can be inspired while also providing mentorship and inspiration to other emerging artists.”  – Maria Bosnjak, Vice President, Greater Toronto Region, RBC Royal Bank
