Sir Sandford Fleming 1827-1915

A pioneer in world communications, Fleming was born in Scotland where he trained as an engineer and surveyor before settling in the Peterborough area in 1845. Of his many achievements, he is probably best known as the inventor of Standard Time, the universal system for reckoning time that was adopted in 1884.
