History in their Hands: A Living Archive is a photographic exhibition that honours the Black community of Dresden, Ontario by reclaiming ancestral memory through intimate portraiture. Community members are photographed holding images from their personal or familial archives, connecting past and present through visual storytelling. Set in meaningful local settings, the exhibit highlights the resilience, cultural contributions and lived experiences that shape the region's identity. Coinciding with Canada Day, the project challenges traditional narratives and affirms the vital presence of Black Canadians in our nation's story. It transforms familiar spaces and the individuals within them into living archives of memory, meaning and collective heritage.
