"Colored Corps" 1812-1815, The

Anxious to preserve their freedom and prove their loyalty to Britain, people of African descent living in Niagara offered to raise their own militia unit in 1812. Instead, authorities formed a Colored Corps commanded by white officers. The men saw action at Queenston Heights and at the siege of Fort George.
