Horatio Emmons Hale 1817-1896

As a member of the Wilkes Expedition to the Pacific in 1838-42, Hale compiled a detailed report on linguistics and customs that is still regarded as fundamental to the study of Polynesian ethnology. Hale practised law in Clinton for 40 years, during which time he undertook extensive studies of the language and customs of the Six Nations Iroquois.
