Nine Mile Portage, The

A link in the line of communication between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay, this early portage ran west from the landing place at the headwaters of Kempenfelt Bay (Barrie) to Willow Creek. During the War of 1812, the portage was cleared and over the next decade was used as a supply route to the naval and military establishments at Penetanguishene.
