Tom Thomson 1877-1917

One of Canada's best-known painters, Thomson grew up in Leith and worked as a commercial artist before starting to paint in oils. His canvases of the forests of northern Ontario reveal a distinctive style of painting and strongly influenced the Group of Seven.
