The Dawn Settlement
Born enslaved in Maryland, Josiah Henson (1789-1883) escaped to Upper Canada at the age of 41. In 1841, with a group of abolitionists, he established the Dawn Settlement for fugitive slaves. Even after the abolition of slavery, Henson remained in Canada.
