Battle of Paardeberg (South African War)

Join the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum on February 21 as we mark the 120th anniversary of the Battle of Paardeberg. To mark this occasion, the museum has renewed its permanent gallery.

This period in history is particularly important for the Royal Canadian Regiment, with its creation as an instructional school for Canadian militia and its evolution to a mature army unit, capable of providing men and officers for the first Canadian unit deployed overseas. (They joined the British Empire in its fight against the Protestant Dutch from South Africa, also known as the Boers.)

They were victorious against the Boers at Paardeberg Drift on Modder River – the first significant British victory in the war. This victory inspired celebrations across the country, with annual gatherings on February 27 each year from 1901 to 1914.

The new exhibition features unique artifacts and archival material, period uniforms, photographs, medals and personal souvenirs collected by members of the unit who were part of the North West Field Force (1885), and Yukon Field Force (1899-1900).
