Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Young Heritage Leaders

The Young Heritage Leaders award recognizes individuals and groups who have made contributions through volunteer or paid work to built, cultural and/or natural heritage conservation. It celebrates the contributions of young people in identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting Ontario’s heritage. The recipient(s) of the individual award will receive the Young Heritage Leaders Scholarship of $3,500 — jointly funded by Canada Life and the Ontario Heritage Trust — toward their post-secondary education. Groups are not eligible for scholarships.

A maximum of three individuals are granted the award and scholarship annually in this category.

Adjudication criteria

The jury will assess all eligible applications based on the adjudication criteria for each award category and with consideration for alignment with standards, best practices, legislation, etc., relevant to the applicable heritage field.

The following are the main criteria used by the jury for the Young Heritage Leaders award:

  • individual/group has proven their commitment to the field of heritage
  • individual’s/group’s work has had a positive impact on the community, region or province

Who is eligible?

  • self-nominations are eligible
  • any organization or individual can be a nominator
  • nominees must be residents of Ontario
  • nominees must be 24 years of age or under at the time of application

Who is not eligible?

  • incomplete nominations will not be considered — at least one completed reference from a relevant organization or community member must be provided for the application to be considered complete
  • staff and Board members of the Ontario Heritage Trust and their immediate families are not eligible
  • posthumous nominations are not eligible
