Colonel Elizabeth Smellie 1884-1968

A native of Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay), Elizabeth Smellie became the first woman to attain the rank of colonel in the Canadian armed forces. In the First World War, she served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in France and England, and in 1941 organized the Canadian Women's Army Corps.
