First Women's Institute 1897, The

As a result of Erland Lee's organizing efforts, some 100 women from the surrounding district gathered on February 19, 1897 and, at the urging of Adelaide Hoodless, drafted a constitution for a society devoted to improving homemaking and child care skills. The Women's Institutes movement subsequently gained worldwide participation.
