Victoria Boat Disaster 1881, The

One of the worst marine disasters in Canada occurred on May 24, 1881 when the excursion steamer Victoria sank in the Thames River. Overcrowded with excited holidaymakers, the flat-bottomed boat overturned and close to 200 of its 600 passengers were drowned.
