Prescribed Grazing for Invasive Plant Control, Mississauga
City of Mississauga Forestry Division began Ontario’s first municipal use of goat grazing in 2024 as part of the City of Mississauga’s Invasive Species Management Plan, to control invasive plant species. In 2025, the city expanded the program to cover five wetlands, woodlands and parks throughout Mississauga's vast natural heritage landscape. This traditional agricultural technique, combined with modern science and monitoring methods, serves as a solution to the typical problems faced when removing invasive species. Goat grazing reduces reliance on herbicides, mitigates the risk of spreading seeds during removal and allows for access to difficult terrains. Through this project, Mississauga has become a leader in this low-impact method of habitat management in Ontario.
