Peggy Plet

Peggy Plet has spent 18 years delving into historical databases and archives to bring long-forgotten stories of the first Black settlers in Ontario to life. In collaboration with the City of Waterloo Museum, Peggy curated the exhibit "Seeking Home: The Story of Black Settler Levi Carroll," about the life of a formerly enslaved man who escaped to Canada and settled in Waterloo. This is one example of the many stories of overlooked people who played a role in building Kitchener-Waterloo, which Peggy has been able to share through interviews, articles, tours and presentations at libraries and local heritage organizations. As Peggy says during her lectures, “Black history is Canadian history,” and her dedication and vision have made a truer understanding Ontario’s heritage possible.
