100th Anniversary of the York Regional Forest, York Region
Regional Municipality of York — Natural Heritage & Forestry Division led a year-long natural heritage celebration to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the first trees planted in the Regional forest. The 100th anniversary festivities included guided walks, exhibits, commemorative and informational plaque installations, photo contests and giveaways. York Region also purchased a 142-hectare (350-acre) tract of land, supported by the Federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, and planted 3,000 new trees in 2025. The celebrations increased community interest in biodiversity and in the 150 kilometres (93 miles) of hiking trails (seven kilometres of which are wheelchair accessible) available throughout Ontario’s now-over-2,500-hectare (6,175-acre) York Regional Forest.
