In 1992, Mark McKoy was the first Canadian track and field athlete to win Olympic gold in the 110-metre hurdles. McKoy was born on December 10, 1961 in Georgetown, Guyana and moved to Toronto when he was 12. In 1980, at the age of 18, he began competing for Canada in the Olympics. In 1982, at the Commonwealth Games, McKoy won the gold medal in the 110-metre hurdles and silver in the 4x100-metre relay. In 1986, McKoy captured two world records in the 50- and 60-metre hurdles. McKoy competed in his fourth Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in 1992, where he won the gold medal in a time of 13.12 seconds. The following year, at the World Indoor Games in Toronto, he won gold in the 60-metre hurdles. Since retiring from competition in 1996, McKoy has been a trainer and sports ambassador.
