Milestones in Ontario’s history

To mark Ontario Day in 2026, we at the Trust challenged ourselves to create a concise timeline of significant milestones in Ontario’s history.

Why did we do this? As the province’s heritage agency, one of our goals is to foster a sense of belonging and shared history for everyone that calls Ontario home.

As we considered the events that have made Ontario what it is today, it was almost impossible to choose just 25 milestones. Ontario’s history is made up of countless little stories passed down through many generations of people. Over time, Ontario has become more prosperous, innovative and equitable, but change has not been linear or universal to all people.

The timeline below includes events that have shaped the people of Ontario — where we live, our rights and our government. It isn’t complete, but it sparks the question: What events in Ontario’s past have shaped you?
